Pattern Spotlight: Fissure

I have had this pattern in my head for a while now, and was just waiting for the perfect yarn to come along, and then I was able to get a preview of Anzula's new yarn Gerty and knew it would be perfect! I love Anzula's colors, and no different on this base, they have a very tender quality to them. The yarn itself is crisp, bouncy and has a very natural feel to it.

But I bet you probably want to hear about the shawl.

Fissure knit with Anzula Gerty in colorways Victoria, Gravity, and Herb.

This shawl is about change. Letting change happen and making change happen. Change that takes place in nature and in our lives everyday.

In nature change often is seasonal and cyclical and ever repeating in a never ending dance. Fissure can be the dry earth cracking open in the hot summer sun, or concrete giving way to roots pushing up from below the sidewalk. The change of spring sprouting to the surface, or the change of cracks when something has been stagnant and there too long.

Looking at the word, it evokes some mixed feelings, a disconnect perhaps, a break in our relationship with nature, a weakened area. But a weakened are can be a good thing, if it breaks you free from an unjust place. And in this way it can be a reminder that something is shifting, stirring. Change will happen, needs to happen, and perhaps we need to help it along.

Where ever in your life or the world you may want to move and shake things, and have real change happen, I hope this shawl can be a reminder to you, that even the smallest crack can point the way for major shifts!

The shawl uses 3 colors in subtle contrasts, and a slip stitch and slip stitch 'pseudo' cable pattern. I call it that, because you can easily manipulate these stitches without ever using a cable needle. (I didn't use one for the entire shawl even though the pattern calls for one).

You can get your own copy of the Fissure pattern on Ravelry here. Now through November 5th you can use the coupon code "Change" for 25% off.

Pattern Spotlight: Escondido Falls Shawl

Ready for an adventure with cables and lace and color? The Escondido Falls Shawl is a wedge-shaped shawl worked from the bottom up, with an edging of lush lace and dense cabling. You can work it in either two colors, in one color, or in one color for the body and cable section, and a second color for the lace.

I got to meet Gerty, Anzula's new 100% Targhee yarn, this past summer at TNNA. I'm big fan of American wool, and was thrilled that Anzula was coming out in a breed-specific American wool, milled in the US, in their amazing palette of colors.

I decided to do a two-colored cable shawl to explore how Gerty would play with the cables, lace, and colorwork. I chose Clay, a greenish neutral, as the contrast color for the lace and cables, and Teddy, a warm rich brown, as the main color.

After working on the pattern, I thought it's be great to do a single colored version as well, for those of you who just want to play with TWO techniques (cables and lace) at a time. :)

The Targhee is extremely bouncy. You can block the heck out of it and it springs back.  I initially blocked the two-colored cable shawl to 90¼” / 229 cm along the lace edge to really open up the lace; it now measures 77¼” / 196.5cm, two weeks or so later (the lace edge looks great).

The lace is still perfect even with the spring back of this bouncy yarn.

I chose to give this shawl a California place name. I love exploring California parks, and especially waterfall hikes. There are some really neat waterfalls in the Los Angeles area, especially if we’ve had a wet winter, and one of the best is Escondido Falls in Malibu.

See my blog post here for more details. (Tip: sign up for my newsletter via my blog to get a discount on this pattern through midnight October 2nd 2017 PST.)

The pattern is available on Ravelry for $7. Line by line instructions are included for the single color version; the two colored version is charted only.

Pattern Spotlight: Fortis

I love fall – it’s time for all the shawls! Fortis is the perfect shawl for the quickly cooling weather.

Fortis is a top-down crescent shawl with a knitted-on border. The body of the shawl is worked in garter stitch, which makes the already squishy Anzula Gerty yarn feel extra bouncy! The border is a simple six-row repeat, making it easy to memorize. A simple six-stitch cable adorns the border, so it’s super easy to cable without a cable needle. I think it would actually make a great first pattern for trying that technique – you’ll get lots of practice on that beautiful border.

I chose the bright and cheery Arizona colorway for my Fortis shawl. It caught my eye while at TNNA and I wasn’t leaving without it. It reminds me of a sunset and the Southwest and autumn all at the same time!

The pattern is now available on Ravelry and retails for $6.50. With the coupon code “gertygoodness” you can get the pattern for just $4 at checkout, thru September 24.
